PASSIVE AND ACTIVE BASSES PICKUPS

PASSIVE PICKUPS

The term passive is given to a bass without any on-board electronics that boost the pickup
signal.  The bass amplifier is used to boost and cut the pickup's signal frequencies. Examples of
passive bases are the original Fender Precision and Jazz basses.  (Active versions of these
models are available.)

ACTIVE PICKUPS

The active bass has a built in pre-amp that boosts and cuts frequencies from the pickup source.
Active pickups are usually powered by 9 volt battery.  They give greater volume and extra
control over the tone.  This makes it possible for the bassist to play with a lighter touch which
facilitates a faster playing technique.
