
NECKS AND NECK TYPES
The two most common types are maple and maple with rosewood fretboard. Typically speaking
maple with rosewood fretboard will give a warmer tone while maple on its own will give a brighter
tone. Both types of neck have a different look and feel than the other. Choosing either is personal
preference. In recent years graphite necks have been introduced to the bass market. Graphite necks
are very hard and durable. They are made from a composite resin material and have a completely
different look and feel from their wood counterparts. They are known for giving great sustain and their
manufactures make claim to perfect tonality and the elimination of dead spots.
BOLT ON NECKS
Bolt on necks are the most common type of necks. This type of neck is a separate from the body. It
is bolted on to body with screws.
NECK THRU
This type of neck is cut out with the body of the bass essentially becoming one fused unit of body
and neck the manufacturers claim the advantage of this bass is better tonality and sustain.
FRETTED NECKS
The frets placed these necks ensure the precision in finger placement and note accuracy.
FRETLESS NECKS
These necks are smooth and typically have no fretboard note markings. This type of neck demands an
excellent finger technique and intonation. They are known for being very expressive.
